The Old Ship of State Lists to the Left –
Franklin D. Roosevelt ushered in the “welfare state.” Government became the benevolent helper, and with that aid, the federal government usurped powers beyond the limits of the Constitution. This was met by the Supreme Court ruling many of Roosevelt’s programs as unconstitutional and by Roosevelt’s effort to “pack” the court so as to overrule previous decisions. While Roosevelt called for a new Bill of Rights, Robert A. Taft challenged the government’s effort to guarantee employment.
On foreign affairs, Roosevelt recognized the Soviet Union, called for war against Japan, and was a party to the Yalta Agreement which resulted in the establishment of the United Nations and the turning of Eastern Europe over to communist Russia.
