A Return to Normalcy –
Though historians are hard on Warren G. Harding, he in fact was a breath of fresh air. The stench of socialism had permeated the air under the leadership of Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson. Added to this, the first Great War was fought to end all wars. Increased government involvement in the domestic and foreign affairs led to great strides of usurpation on the part of the federal government. President Harding came to office calling for downsizing of the federal government and a more frugal fiscal policy. He also called for tax cuts and was emphatic that under his tenure in office the United States would not enter into the League of Nations. This was quite a contrast to the progressive philosophy. Had death not cut his work short and had political friends not abused their offices, he may have been able to reverse the socialistic trends that the nation was undergoing.
