All Is Fair in Love, War, and Politics –
Republicans held control of the executive branch of government in spite of the democratic candidate Samuel J. Tilden winning the popular vote.  The final decision by the special election committee was not forthcoming until three days before the inauguration.  Hayes was already on the train to Washington, D.C. when he received word.  His tenure in office marks the end of the official reconstruction period, but do not be deceived.  America would continue in reconstruction mode throughout the century.  Economics would be the issue and would result in the foundational base for the Progressive Era.

We include Hayes as a part of the physical reconstruction period, but the booklet deals with economics, as well.  Gold, silver, and paper currency are to become the issues of the days that lie ahead.
