John Witherspoon, more than any other man, shaped the thought process that gave birth to the American Constitution. Witherspoon was president of the College of New Jersey from 1768-1794. In those 26 years, 478 young men graduated (about 18 per year). Of those 478 graduates, 114 were ministers; 13 were state governors; 3 were U.S. Supreme Court Justices; 20 were U.S. Congressmen. Aaron Burr, Jr. became Vice President and James Madison became President. Of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention, 9 (1/6th) were College of New Jersey graduates and 6 graduated while Witherspoon was president.
