He Stood Against Efforts to Alter the Constitution –
The Johnson administration marks the beginning of the Reconstruction Era. Radical republicans who were angered by the assassination of Lincoln moved quickly against the South with every intention of crushing resistance and making the South suffer for the war effort. Andrew Johnson sought to temper the radical movements by offering generous terms to the South to bring about reconciliation.
Conflict in resolution resulted in impeachment charges being brought against President Johnson who was determined to stand upon constitutional principles. Though he, a Southerner, won the impeachment vote, he could not stop the Amendments to the Constitution that were passed by a hostile Congress.
