Controversial Issues Tend to Blot and Distort Our View of Historical Figures –
Franklin Pierce has been demeaned in the eyes of the public.  Historians view him as a Northerner with a Southern heart because he spoke out in defense of the South’s right to secede.  Had he lived in the Jackson era, he would have ranked well with the Founding Fathers.  His comments on the origin of the federal Union, the proper scheme of government along with his dissertation of the slave issue reveals Pierce to be extremely well-versed in constitutional law and social issues of the day.  He understood and wrestled with issues that were present long before his birth.  Like Pierce, we too must sort out truth from error.
