Gifted, but Falling Short of His Expectations –
No man came into office with greater potential than John Tyler. A Jeffersonian-Jacksonian Democrat, Tyler ran on the Whig Party which gained the necessary votes for the Harrison/Tyler ticket. With Harrison’s death, Tyler determined to be his own man and sought to lead the nation in the Jefferson/Jackson tradition. By contrast, the Whig Party favored a national bank, federal funding of internal improvements, and expansion of the national government – all of which Tyler opposed. In rebellion, his cabinet resigned and his efforts were stymied. He is the only American President to officially join with the Southern states who seceded from the Union.
