Lessons to Learn in His Life and Death –
President Harrison had the distinction of being the first President to die in office and in serving the shortest term – one month.  Elected as a Whig, he had committed himself to just one term with governance by a consensus of his cabinet.  He feared that a strong aggressive personality in the executive office posed the greatest threat to America’s experiment in freedom.   One should read his Inaugural Address to gain insight into many of his views.

The real issues lie not in his life but in the events after his death.  For the first time in America’s history, Congress sought to take funds from the public treasury for the benefit of his widow.  A heated debate followed with Thomas Benton leading the charge to prevent the passage of the bill.
